EL CENTRO, Calif. (October 16, 2016) - For the third-straight year, the Rollins water ski team took fifth at the National Collegiate Water Ski Association National Championships. The Tars dominated tricks with the women winning as a team while Natalia Cuglievan and Josh Briant each took individual titles.
The Tars totaled 9,145 points, nearly 400 better than a year ago, to finish just behind fourth place Alabama (10,705). Louisiana Monroe won the team championship with a score of 11,260 while Louisiana Lafayette was second (11,135) and Florida Southern third (10,970).
On the men's side, Dorien Llewellyn led the way with an overall runner-up finish. Josh Briant was sixth behind a championship in tricks while Rafael De Osma took 15th. Miks Cincias finished 21st.
In slalom, Llewellyn led the way with a fourth place finish, scoring one buoy at 39.5' off. Joaquin Angulo, Cinis and Briant tied for 17th with each getting 1.5 buoys at 38' off while De Osma was right behind in a tie for 21st with 3.5 buoys at 35' off.
Briant picked up a second-straight national title in tricks, putting up 6820 points. His score was 450 better than the winning effort a year ago. Llewellyn was fourth with 5670 points and De Osma took ninth after scoring 3970. Tommy Wiley finished tied for 29th with 1040 points and Cinis took 35th with a score of 880.
The Tars also turned in a solid performance in jumps, led by Llewellyn's fifth place finish with a distance of 165 feet. Briant jumped 163 feet to finish tied for seventh while De Osma was 23rd, soaring 133 feet. Cinis took 36th after scoring a distance of 92 feet.
Chantal Singer finished 17th overall to pace the Tars women. Silvia Zarrate took 18th and Alexa Armour 21st
Singer led the way for the Tars in slalom, finishing 11th with 5.5 buoys at 35' off. Aliya McTavish was 18th with one buoy at 35' off and Zarrate took 28th after a half buoy at 28' off. Armor took 32nd, getting 1.5 boyos at 22' off.
Rollins tricks title came without the services of two-time defending national champion Erika Lang who sat out with an injury. Cuglievan picked up right were Lang left off, winning the championship with a score of 4500, 310 ahead of second place. Singer rode a score of 3390 and took fourth while McTavish was 14th after scoring 1740. Zarrate was right behind in 16th with a score of 1580 while Armor scored 860 to take 26th.
Zarrate's distance of 67 feet led the Tars in jumps and placed 23rd. Armour took 26th with a distance of 55 feet and Singer went 33 feet to tie for 49th.
The NCWSA Championship concludes the Tars 2016 season.
