LIMA, PERU (August 15, 2019) – A number of Rollins waterskiers and waterski alums showed off their skills on the world stage this summer, competing in the Pan America Games, which took place in Lima, Peru.
Recent graduate Dorien Llewellyn headlined the group, capturing three medals. Senior Natalia Cuglievan captured a gold medal in front of her hometown fans; and Erika Lang picked up a silver medal.
Llewellyn grabbed a silver medal in tricks, tallying a score of 10,430. The Canadian earned a bronze in the jump competition, flying 207 feet. Llewellyn then capped off the competition with a gold medal performance in the Overall Competition. During the overall events Rollins graduate got second in slalom, topped the trick portion, and finished third in jumps, winning the event with a score of 2885.50.
Rafael De Osma also competed, representing the host nation of Peru. The senior reached the final of both the Trick and Jump competitions, but finished just off the medal stand.
Cuglievan won her second Tricks Pan-Am Gold, after capturing the title in 2015 as well, while representing the hosts. "It's a great honor for me to represent Peru and to make water skiing better known. I did feel a little more pressure because I was competing in my home country, in front of my family and my people. But all the effort I put in was worth it," Natalia shared after the event.
Erika Lang finished second to her former teammate in the tricks competition. The Gilbert, Arizona native, representing the United States, also advanced to the final of the slalom competition.
Alejandra De Osma, who will return to Rollins as a sophomore, competed in the slalom, trick, jump, and overall events, just missing the podium with a fourth place finish in slalom and sixth place finishes in jumps and overall.
All these skiers, along with a number of other current and former Tars, will turn their attention to the IWWF World Championships, which will conclude on August 19.
