Rollins Takes Down No. 23 Tampa

WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 10, 2018) – Rollins powered its way past Sunshine State Conference frontrunner No. 23 Tampa on Wednesday, posting big a 59-52 victory.

The Tars are trending upward nearing the midway point of the conference schedule and improve to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in league play. Tampa drops to 12-4, 5-2 SSC.

The victory also improves head coach Glenn Wilkes Jr. career record to 695-240, inching closer to the 700-win milestone.

Julia Ingler poured in 17 points and handed out five assists to lead Rollins. Denise Daniels tallied nine points and nine rebounds while Carly McLendon posted nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Rollins shot just 38 percent (22-58) from the field and were outrebounded 37-35, but committed only five turnovers while forcing 10. Tampa shot 40 percent (21-52) from the floor.

The Tars hit four of their first five shots and raced out to an 8-2 lead over the first three minutes. Tampa, however, came back to tied the score at 13 after the first quarter. UT took its first lead of the game early in the second before three-pointers from Ingler and Jo Bistrow put the Tars back on top 22-17. Tampa again came back to even the score, this time at 22 with 1:15 left in the half. Jaylyn Harrison capitalized on a UT turnover and scored a late bucked for the Tars, giving the home team a 24-22 lead at the break.

Rollins came out of the locker room on fire in the third quarter and went up 33-22 after a Vernisha Andrews jumper at the 6:32 mark. UT called timeout and responded with a 15-0 run and swung the lead its way, 37-33 with 1:38 left in the quarter. Buckets by McLendon and Daniels in the final possession tied the score 37-37 heading into the fourth.

The score was tied 43-43 with 5:16 to play before another Ingler triple sparked a 10-1 run to give Rollins a 53-44 lead with 95 seconds to play. UT got as close as five in the final seconds, but Ingler closed the door with two at the three-throw line to give Rollins a second-straight win.

The Tars will complete the first half the SSC schedule on Saturday, January 13 in Lakeland facing rival Florida Southern. The Mocs moved to atop the SSC standings with the Tars win over UT. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. Fans can catch the action on the Tars Sport Network at SSC Digital Network at
