MELBOURNE, Fla. (October 24, 2018) – Rollins women's basketball was tabbed No. 7 in the Sunshine State Conference preseason poll, it was announced Wednesday.
The Tars earned 45 points in the poll, conducted among the SSC's 11 head coaches. Florida Southern was picked to repeat as champion with 100 votes and 10 first-place nods. Eckerd picked up the other first place vote and was second with 88 total votes.
Tampa (73) checked-in at No. 3 while Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern (66) tied for fourth and Barry (65) was sixth.
Rollins is coming off a 12-14 season a year ago and has made the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament five of the last seven years.
After exhibition games against Hillsborough Community College (Oct. 26) and Daytona State (Oct. 29), Rollins opens the season Friday, October 9 at home against Webber International. Head Coach Glenn Wilkes Jr. is just three wins away from reaching 700 in his 33-year career.
Looking to fill the void left with the graduation of four seniors, including leading scorer Julia Ingler, are 10 returners and five new freshmen. Denise Daniels is the top returning scorer after netting 9.2 a game last year while Jaylyn Harrison posted 8.5 points and 2.8 assists a game. Vernisha Andrews added eight-points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds a night.
Carly McLendon became the Tars all-time leading shot-blocker last season and returns for a senior season looking to add to her record. Fellow forward Tianna Rosser returns from injury and will be a big factor in the Tars success this season.
All Rollins games can be found live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSportsLive.com with students from Full Sail University's Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting on the call for home games.
