WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 23, 2018) – Rollins head coach Glenn Wilkes, Jr. recorded his 699th career victory as the Tars beat the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 76-48 Friday afternoon.
The Tars advance to meet 13th-ranked USciences in the Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament Championship, Saturday at 2 p.m. The Devils beat Hillsdale 75-60 in the other semifinal Saturday.
PR-Mayaguez (0-4) got 10 points each from Maria Medina and Itamar Rosado.
The Tars shot a season-best 50-percent from the field while holding the Janes to 32-percent from the field. Rollins again dominated the glass with a 41-31 rebounding edge.
After two-straight losses coming into the game, the Tars started on fire, outscoring Mayaguez 18-5 through the first quarter. Rollins then doubled-up the Janes in the second (20-10) and took a 38-15 advantage into the break.
Ten different players scored for the Tars in the first, led by eight from McLendon and seven from Daniels.
The Tars advantage ballooned so as many as 28 in the third and was never less than 22 the rest of the way.
Wilkes Jr. now looks to become just the fourth head coach in Division II and 28th in NCAA women's basketball history to eclipse 700 victories. The 33-year veteran recorded his first victory on November 22, 1986 and since has won nine Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year awards, was the 2006 WBCA National Coach of the Year and was named coach of the SSC Silver Anniversary Team as the top coach in the history of the conference.
