WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2018) – Looking to give head coach Glenn Wilkes Jr. his 700th career win, Rollins came up short Saturday, falling to 13th-ranked University of the Sciences 62-50.
The game served as the Championship match-up for the 2018 Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament. Hillsdale College defeated Puerto Rico Mayaguez 71-52 in the consolation game earlier in the day.
Jordan Vitelli pumped in a game-high 23 points to pace the Devils (5-0). Irisa Ye added 20 points and Alex Thomas scored 12.
The Tars were slow to get out of the gate, shooting 4-of-13 in the first, while USciences hit five three-pointers and posted a 20-10 lead after one.
In the second, Rollins started with a 6-0 run and cut the Devils advantage to 20-16 on a Yari Martinez-Toro put-back layup. The Tars later pulled to within one, but couldn't get the go-ahead bucket and went into intermission trailing 32-24.
Fouls hampered the Tars comeback attempt in the third quarter as Rollins outshot USciences from the floor, but the visitors hit 9-of-12 at the free throw line and the Tars were 1-of-1. Harrison scored the last five points of the quarter and got Rollins to within 51-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
After a pair of Harrison free throws on the first possession of the final quarter, neither team scored for nearly four minutes until the Tars cut the Devils lead to 53-45 with 5:36 to play. Thomas responded with a deep three-pointer and USciences used clutch free throw shooting to lead by as many as 15 in the final minutes.
Rollins shot 37 percent in the game while USciences hit 43 percent from the field. The Tars earned a 31-30 edge in rebounding and committed a season-low nine turnovers while forcing 11.
Wilkes Jr. will next go for win 700 on Wednesday, November 28 when the Tars begin Sunshine State Conference play hosting Embry-Riddle. The Eagles are 5-0 on the year and were one of the SSC preseason favorites. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Warden Arena.
