Tars Shake off Slow Start and Run Past Janes

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 19, 2019) – Rollins turned a first quarter deficit into a 15-point halftime lead and never looked back, posting an 82-66 win over the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez.

The Tars improve to 4-1 with a win in their 2019-20 home opener while the Janes fall to 0-2.

Rachel Jablonski went 3-of-4 from long range en route to a team-high 13 points. Yari Martinez-Toro added 11 points and Rachel Lia scored 10 to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Dana Arce led UPR-M with 21 points behind a 5-of-11 night from beyond the arc. Moncia Perez scored 10.

The Tars fell into an 10-2 hole after the first four minutes, prompting head coach Glenn Wilkes, Jr. to send in another five-player line-up for the third time in the early stages. Rollins finally got it going and responded with an 8-0 run to even the score 10-10 with 3:18 left in the first.

Rollins closed the first trailing 16-14.

Behind a big night on the glass, the Tars rolled off a 15-2 run in the middle of the second and grabbed a 36-24 lead with 3:57 in the half. The Janes got to within 10, but Rollins scored the last five points of the half and led 41-26 at the break.

Rollins didn't let Mayaguez get any closer than 13 in the third and pushed the advantage to 20 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Despite hot outside shooting from the Janes in the final period, Rollins kept the visitors at bay and won its home lid lifter.

The Tars shot 44 percent in the game and held Mayaguez to 41 percent from the field. Rollins outrebounded the Janes 45-30 and forced 16 turnovers.

Rollins will next host New York Tech on Friday, November 23 at 4 p.m. They close the week with a return game with Mayaguez on Sunday, November 24 at noon. Fans can catch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
