WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2019) – Freshman Paris Sharpe had a breakout game and led Rollins to a 71-37 win over the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, the Tars fourth-straight win.
Sharpe was 7-of-9 from the field and added three free throws for a career-high 17 points, leading Rollins (6-1) offense. Jaylyn Harrison added 11 points and Rachel Lia netted 10. Denise Daniels hauled in 11 rebounds, her third straight game with double-digit boards, to tie a career-high.
Monica Perez scored 11 for Mayaguez (0-5) while Iatmar Rosado Rodriguez netted 10.
Rollins trailed most of the first quarter and was down by eight at the midway point of the opening frame. They closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to pull even 12-12 after the first 10 minutes.
An 11-0 run to start the second put Rollins firmly in control with Tianna Rosser scoring six during the span. The Tars led by as many as 12 in the second and took a 34-24 lead into the break.
The Janes got as close as five in the third before Sharpe found her groove and pushed the Rollins advantage to 51-34 heading into the fourth. The Tars went on to outscore the visitors 20-3, holding Mayaguez to just one field goal, in the final 10 minutes and cruised to the win.
Rollins shot just 26 percent in the first quarter, but finished 42 percent for the game. Mayaguez was 25 percent from the floor and were out rebounded by Rollins 59-36.
