HOUSTON, Texas (May 16, 2018) – Rollins shot an opening round 302 Wednesday and grabbed seventh to start the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship.
The challenging front-nine proved to be the difference maker. The Tars started on the back and were in the top-five at the turn, but played the front at 12-over in the afternoon.
The University of Indianapolis was collectively two-under on the front and leads the field after posting a two-under 286. The Greyhounds have all players in the top-16 on the individual leaderboard. Dallas Baptist turned in a two-over 290 to sit second and defending national champion Barry is third, four-over after a 292. Cal Baptist (293) and Nova Southeastern (296) round out the top-five.
Seher Atwal leads eighth-ranked Rollins, firing an even-par 72 and sitting tied for 12th. The sophomore took bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17 and fell to two-over before back-to-back birdies on No. 18 and No. 1 to get back level. She then finished the day with eight-straight pars.
Senior Lexie Toth is two-over for the event and tied for 27th with an opening round 74. She bogeyed No. 11 and No. 15 before posting a birdie-three on No. 17. A bogey came on No. 4 and she closed the day with five pars.
Like Toth, also playing in a fourth-straight national championship, Madison Lellyo is tied for 34th at four-over with a 76. She was even through six holes with a bogey on No. 13 and birdie on No. 15. The Orlando native then hit a rough patch and dropped five strokes before a birdie-two on No. 8 and bar on the closing hole got her back on track.
Freshman Lara van Staden is tied for 57th at eight-over with a first-round 80. She was seven-over at the turn and grabbed a birdie on No. 2 to get on track. Selin Timur shot a first round 82 and is tied for 64th with at 10-over.
Casey Wild of Tarleton State and Kiira Riihiijavi from Tampa both shot three-under scores of 69 and are tied for the first-round lead.
The second of the tournaments four rounds at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston is set for Thursday, May 17 with Rollins teeing off on No. 1 starting at 9:20 a.m. Central. The Tars are grouped with West Texas A&M and Indianapolis for the second-straight day.
