CLEVELAND, Tenn. (May 8, 2019) – Rollins women's golf took 10th place at the NCAA Division II South Region Championship, ending its 2018-19 campaign.
The Tars turned in their best score of the tournament on Wednesday, shooting a 13-over 301, but couldn't gain any ground on the field, finishing 53-over with rounds of 303-313-301.
Lee University served as host of the event at Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Lynn won the tournament with a 20-over 884. Limestone (+26), Barry (+28) and Florida Tech (+35) are the four teams advancing to the NCAA National Championship from the South.
"We came into the postseason seeded ninth in the region, but of course had hoped we would fare better here," said Rollins Director of Golf and women's head coach Julie Garner. "With Seher (Atwal) being under the weather most of the week, it made a tough climb even tougher. The second round dashed any real hope we had of making a run at the top-four. Making the postseason is of course an accomplishment, but for our program the bar is set higher."
Atwal led the way for the Tars, finishing tied for 20th. The junior shot 77-73 the first two rounds and closed with a three-over 75 to finish nine-over for the tournament. Starting on the back, She was one-over at the turn after a birdie on 18 and played the second nine at two-over.
Freshman Jennifer Jung finished 33rd in her first NCAA tournament, posting scores of 75-80-74 (+13). She found herself even at the turn and was up and down the front . She was again even with only hole left to play before taking a double bogey to close. Selin Timur jumped eight spots on the leaderboard Wednesday into a tie for 41st. She turned in rounds of 76-81-76 to finish at 17-over.
"Our entire team is returning and we have some new players coming in, so we need to focus our efforts this summer on how best to improve our tournament play" added Garner. "The team knows they need to return in the fall prepared to compete for a top-five spot. This has been our formula for success and we will need to get back to that; and we will!"
