Weather Delays No Match for Second-Ranked Tars in 9-7 Victory over Florida Tech

Rollins Gets Back to Winning Ways; German and Ashton Earn Hat Tricks

WINTER PARK, Fla.  (April 6, 2019) – Despite two separate weather delays that totaled almost an hour and a half, the second-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team was able to defeat the Florida Tech Panthers by a final score of 9-7 on Saturday night at Cahall-Sandspur Field.  The win advances Rollins to 11-1, and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference action, while the Panthers drop to 5-7 overall, and 0-3 in SSC play.

Kallie German and Hannah Ashton led the team with three goals apiece, followed by two from Sammy Ottimo, and one from Rachel Valocchi.  Both Lily Rizk and Nikki Stumpf earned one assist each on the night.  Gabby Tanner won a team high four ground balls as she saw a full 60 minutes in goal where she faced 15 shots from FIT.  Tanner earned eight saves while allowing seven goals.  Maggie Dougherty led the team in draw controls with three, followed by Lindsay Van Beck with two of her own while adding tow ground balls.  Leading the team in caused turnovers was German with a game high five, followed by Van Beck, Dougherty, and Ottimo with two apiece.

Florida Tech saw a team best three goals from Sam Schiano, followed by two from Kailee O'Brien.  Both Lexi Woviotis and Caroline MacLeod scored one goal apiece.  In goal, Chloe Zador earned a team high six ground balls as she played a full game, facing 26 shots from the Tars where she earned 17 saves while allowing nine goals.  Schiano followed with four ground balls of her own, and led the team in draw controls with four while causing a team best two caused turnovers.  Matching Schiano with two caused turnovers of her own was MacLeod.

How it Happened:
Rollins held onto a 6-1 lead at halftime, but four minutes into the second period the game was halted due to inclement weather.  The first weather day lasted an hour and 13 minutes before the all clear signal was given and both teams were able to get back out onto the field for a quick warmup before play resumed.  However, after nine minutes of action, the game was halted once more, this time with a weather delay lasting 11 minutes before play was able to get back under way.  Throughout the disjointed second half, the Panthers were able to stage a comeback, outscoring the Tars 6-3 to pull to within two of the Tars, but Rollins ended up walking away with the victory, 9-7, to earn their second SSC win of the season.

Notes:

  • The game marked just the second time in program history that the Tars have hosted the Panthers on their home field.  When playing on their home turf against FIT, Rollins is now 1-1.  In the series history, the Tars now lead 4-3.
  • Kallie German is six goals away from becoming the program's all-time leader in career goals.
  • Lindsay Van Beck is seven caused turnovers away from becoming the program's all-time leader in career caused turnovers.  She currently has 99 under her belt, and needs to surpass leader Courtney Bianculli `13, who amassed 107 in her career with the Tars.
  • Rollins entered into the game ranked No. 2 on the IWLCA DII Poll, and No. 3 on the NIKE/US Lacrosse DII Top 20.
  • Florida Tech entered into the game unranked on both polls.
