WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 3, 2019) – The Rollins women's rowing season started Saturday going head-to-head with UCF at the annual Metro Cup on Lake Maitland.
The event proved to be an early season test for the Tars against a tough Division I team.
The novices had been working towards the day since joining the team and did not disappoint in their first collegiate regatta.
"Practice can only prepare you for so much," said Head Coach Shawn Pistor. "This group really needed to get a race under their belt and truly understand what they have been training so hard for."
Rollins was not able to get a win in any of the events they rowed Saturday but the multiple races each rower experienced was very beneficial.
The Novice 4 of Margaret Stewart (cox), Alyssa Murphy, Britta Brown, Elsa Heisler and Natasha Kusibab put up a great fight in their event and were just edged out of second place by one second over the UCF B boat.
The Novice 8 also posted their best time to date in their event, stopping the clock at 7:56.1, just 20 seconds back of the UCF boat.
"The varsity and JV boats logged the meters and training and will use todays experience going into their racing next weekend at the Rollins Invitational," added Pistor. "Rollins will get to line up against other DII schools and I look forward to the speed these teams bring."
Rollins will host Villanova, Duquesne, Assumption, Clark University and Stetson in what will be a busy day on the waters of Lake Maitland, Saturday March 9.
