WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2019) – The Rollins women's rowing team rebounded in a big way from a tough opening weekend, earning its first medals of the year at the Rollins Invitational on Saturday.
The Tars went up against Duquesne, Villanova, Clark, Stetson and Assumption, winning the DII Varsity 8 and DII Varsity 4 over Assumption.
Cameron Robinson, Grace Wamester, Samantha Talucci, Elizabeth Berry, Rachel Wasserman, Samantha Bates, Nicole Hubert, Ashley Kinsley, and Allison Stewart rowed the Varsity 8 boat while Alyssa Rabade, Victoria Jones, Natasha Kusibab, Alyssa Murphy and Britta Brown competed in the Varsity 4.
Rollins was .1 seconds behind Clark in the DII Varsity 8 race, but the official changed the order of finish due to Clark steering error that pushed Rollins off course and impeded its progress, clashing blades.
"We race as much as possible early in the season so that we have experiences just like this and that they will not affect us when we race in our championships" said Head Coach Shawn Pistor. "The race was a battle from start to finish and was really what this boat needed to continue its progress forward."
The DII 4 was raced this weekend with three novice who had earned their way in. They were led by senior, Victoria Jones, and stepped up to challenge today.
The Novice 8 and Novice 4 both placed second against DI teams and continue to increase their learning curve of the sport and racing.
The Novice 8 was second behind Villanova and able to beat Duquesne and Clark. The Novice 4 finished second behind Stetson but beat Villanova, Duquesne and Assumption. The JV8 made up of mostly novice also competed in the 2nd Varsity 8 placing fifth, but were within striking distance most of the race to Clark and Stetson but not able to quite make it happen.
The team will have the next couple days to rest for the beginning of spring break and will be back racing on Thursday, March 14 against Embry Riddle and then on Saturday March 16 for their final home regatta against Stockton, Florida, Barry and Wesleyan.
