PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (May 11, 2019) – Rollins put two crews in the Grand Finals and all four boats posted big finishes to highlight the Tars at the 2019 Dad Vail Regatta.
The annual championship was contested on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia for the 81st year.
The Tars Varsity 4 led the way, finishing fifth in the Division II Grand Final. The boat set the tone in heats, finishing second, just nine seconds back of UC San Diego and 11 ticks ahead of Mercyhurst. They drew a good lane for the Grand Final and took fifth in one of the most exciting races of the weekend. Florida Tech won with UCSC second, Humbolt third and Nova Southeastern fourth. Rollins was just one second back of the Sharks and three seconds ahead of sixth place Jefferson; third through fifth place was less than a two second spread.
The Tars pair also reached the Grand Final, taking sixth in the Bob & Peggy Morro Bowl. The boat was third in its heat to qualify for the championship.
Rollins Novice four had a stellar first experience at Dad Vails, finishing third in the Petite Final. They were 11th in heats and took third in their semifinal race. In the final, the Tars were just behind winner Liberty and runner-up Catholic while handily beating Stockton.
The Tars finished third in the Petite Final in the women's JV4 in another close race. Rollins placed third in heats with Middlebury winning and the Tars placing between Florida Tech and Penn State to earn a spot in the final. Pitt won the race and Lafayette was five seconds ahead of Rollins in second.
Dad Vails concludes the Tars 2019 racing season.
