WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 29, 2018) – Rollins picked up a key win against preseason Sunshine State Conference favorite Nova Southeastern, 3-1, at Barker Family Stadium. The Tars improve to 5-1-3 on the year, and 3-1-0 in SSC action. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Sharks, who now sit at 7-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play.
The Tars got goals from three different scorers, Chynna McGirt, Sarah Buckley and Jill Richards. Kathryn O'Brien added an assist for Rollins. Kelly Rowswell played the full 90 minutes, making two saves. Liz Haizlip recorded the Nova Southeastern goal. Natalie Robayna saw most of the tome net for the Sharks, making two saves.
The Tars defense held stout to open the game, withstanding early aggression from the Sharks. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when McGirt was taken down in the box. Richards stepped up and cooly blasted the ball in from the spot to give the Tars the lead. Buckley scored the Tars second just six minutes later. The junior wrestled the ball away from a Shark defender before turning and striking the ball into the far top corner past the outstretched Robayna. The Tars' final goal came just after the halftime break when O'Brien slid a perfectly weighted trhough ball behind the defense and McGirt ran onto it and placed it in the top corner of the goal behind the keeper. Nova tallied in the 84th minute with a long ball from Haizlip that was blasted in after a corner kick was cleared by Rollins. The ball traveled through traffic and off the post to find its way into the net. The Tars tightened their defense and saw out the final minutes without incident.
Rollins will take to the road again, heading down I-4 to take on the Tampa Spartans on Wednesday, October 3, at 7 p.m.
