WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 7, 2018) – The Tars picked up a trio of victories, capturing the championships in every Flight of the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational. Katie Dyson and Alexandra Borg won the doubles crown, while Dyson and Savanna Fuller picked up singles title in the tournament, which Rollins hosted. Stetson, Saint Leo, and Eckerd also participated in the event.
Borg and Dyson earned a first round bye in the Flight A Doubles competition, before sweeping their way to the championship. The pair bested Selby and Aaron from Eckerd in their first match, Furmaniak and Bukina from Saint Leo in the semifinals, and Geurinckx and Renault from Stetson in the final. Ola Durzynski and Teresa Kaiser finished fifth in the bracket, while Fuller and Katie Groves won the consolation bracket.
In the top singles draw Katie Dyson came out victorious, downing teammate, and doubles partner, Alexandra Borg in the finals 6-2, 7-6 (3). Dyson won a marathon, three set battle against the Lion's Furmaniak in the quarterfinals, winning 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. Dyson bested Durzynski in the semifinals to set up the meeting with Borg. The Tars went one-two in Flight B Singles as well, with Fuller besting Marie Debruyn in the finals by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Fuller also earned a hard fought win over teammate Valentina Serino, and cruised by Saint Leo's Dobell on her way to the victory.
Rollins will conclude their fall season at the Juan Varon Memorial Invitational, in Daytona Beach, on October 26.
