WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2019) – Rollins kicked off 2019 with a convincing 6-1 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex. The No. 20 Tars move to 1-0 on the year, while the Lions fall to 0-1, in what was also their first contest.
After dropping the third court doubles match, Teresa Kaiser and Kaitlynn Groves picked up a first position win, 6-3. Seniors Carlye Goldman and Savanna Fuller then clinched the doubles point for Rollins, with a win in the second spot, giving the Tars the edge heading into singles play.
After the Lions pulled even with a sixth position singles win, the Tars would pull away, winning the remaining matches to claim the victory. The freshman Groves would win her second court match, 6-2, 6-0, to give Rollins a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish. Fuller won in the top spot, posting a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win. Marie Debruyn would put Rollins up 4-1, securing the team victory. Goldman and Kaiser would see out three set wins on the fifth and third courts to increase the margin.
The Tars will play a string of exhibition matches against State College of Florida, Hillsborough Community College, and Bethune-Cookman, before returning to official action by traveling to Valdosta State on Saturday, February 16, for a 1 p.m. match.
