Tars to Collect Donations for "I-4 for Puerto Rico" Relief Drive

Tars to Collect Donations for "I-4 for Puerto Rico" Relief Drive

WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 25, 2017) – The Rollins volleyball team will be accepting donations this week for the "I-4 for Puerto Rico" hurricane relief drive.  The Tars will be accepting supplies at all three of their home matches this week, beginning with their 7 p.m. Sunshine State Conference showdown with Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, September 26.

"The last few weeks have been challenging in a number of ways, but we are very thankful that the extent of Hurricane Irma's damage for us was limited to the loss of electricity, minor damage, time away from games and school, and the anxiety produced by the threat of devastation," said Head Coach Mika Robinson. "When Hurricane Maria followed so closely behind with widespread devastation to Puerto Rico and the USVI, our hearts went out to our families and friends who live there. Several of our current players have a great deal of family in Puerto Rico, several of my college teammates have close family in Puerto Rico, and we were scheduled to play Puerto Rico Mayaguez on the weekend that Irma hit us."

Relief items that are needed include:

Non-Perishable Canned Goods

Toilet Paper

Hand Sanitizer

Bottled Water

Baby Formula

Dog/Cat Food

Adult Diapers

Cleaning Supplies

Trash Bags

(The I-4 for Puerto Rico relief effort has asked that no clothing be donated at this time.)

The Tars will be accepting donations at the following matches this week:

Tuesday, September 26

Rollins vs. Embry-Riddle

Warden Arena

7 p.m.

Friday, September 29

Rollins vs. Florida Southern

Warden Arena

Saturday, September 30

In addition to donated items, the volleyball team will also accept monetary donations which they will use to purchase additional relief items for the drive.

"We know that it will take a while for the islands to rebuild, but we are hoping to help alleviate some of their immediate needs with this supply drive," Robinson added. "Some local businesses have come together to get the supplies to Puerto Rico, and we are happy to help however we can. We believe in the Rollins mission of educating students for global citizenship and responsible leadership, and we want to use our platform to help our neighbors in need."

More about the I-4 for Puerto Rico Relief Drive:  The relief effort's organizer, Randy Ross, has ensured that the "I-4 for Puerto Rico" efforts have partnered not only with Americorps, but with military leaders to ensure the shipment of supplies gets into the hands of those in need in Puerto Rico.  Shipments will be sent by cargo ship once the relief drive has concluded on October 1.
