Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Preseason Poll Released

Rollins Given Nod to Finish Ninth


MELBOURNE, Fla. (August 16, 2018) – The Rollins women's volleyball team has been selected to finish ninth in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Volleyball poll, it was announced by league officials Thursday.  The poll is conducted among the SSC's 11 head coaches.

Entering their third season under the guidance of head coach Mika Robinson, the Tars will look to improve upon a 2017 season that saw them finish ninth in the SSC standings with an overall record of 9-18 and 6-14 mark in conference play.  The Tars graduated seven seniors from their 2017 team, and welcomed five new faces for their 2018 season.

Sunshine State Conference volleyball coaches' have picked Florida Southern to repeat as the conference champion this season.  The Moccasins received 94 total votes, and seven first place votes in the preseason poll.
 
Palm Beach Atlantic University finished a close second with 91 total votes and two first-place votes from league coaches. The University of Tampa edged Saint Leo University for third place in the poll, 80 votes to 79. The Spartans and Lions split the last two first-place votes. Eckerd College rounds out the preseason top five with 64 total votes.

Last season, Florida Southern won its eighth SSC championship and its first since 2006. The Moccasins earned the top seed and hosting rights for the South Region Tournament. Along with FSC, Eckerd, Palm Beach Atlantic, Saint Leo and Tampa gained entry into the 2017 regional tournament.

Eckerd and Tampa fell in the first round of the regional tournament, while Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic lost in the second round. FSC prevailed, taking down the University of West Florida in the regional championship. The Moccasins went on to defeat CSU - San Bernardino and Gannon University at the national tournament before losing to Concordia University - St. Paul in the title game.

Florida Southern and Palm Beach Atlantic represent the SSC in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll at No. 4 and No. 12, respectively. The ranking has Tampa and Saint Leo receiving votes.

The 2018 season opens up will all 11 teams in action on August 24th. The conference schedule begins on September 4th with Florida Southern hosting Eckerd College.
