WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference has released the coach's poll for the 2019 Volleyball season. With eight first place votes, the Tampa Spartans are tabbed to win the conference. Rollins checks in at tenth place with 17 vote points.
The Tars are coming off a disappointing 2018 campaign that saw them finish in last place in the conference standings. However, with the return of six players from last year's squad, and an influx of talent from incoming freshman and transfers, head coach Mika Robinson is looking forward to improving in 2019 and competing for a conference title.
"I believe we are going to be a surprise to a lot of people this season," said Robinson. "We have some young returners who will make a big impact, some transfer players who will make a big impact, and some first-year players who will make a big impact. I also believe this will be a team that will grow by leaps and bounds from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Our team has set some lofty goals, but at the top of that list is to improve every time we step on the floor.""
Tampa, the reigning national champion, is the favorite once again after receiving eight first place votes. They are followed by Barry (whom received three first place votes), Palm Beach Atlantic, Florida Southern, Saint Leo, Lynn, Embry-Riddle, Eckerd, and Nova Southeastern. The Tars slot into the 10th spot, with Florida Tech picked to finish last.
"One of the great things about the SSC is the level of competition we get to face every single day. We all know that anyone can win on any given day, and as competitors you cannot ask for a better scenario to push you to be your best."
Each team in the conference will begin their season during the weekend of September 6th. The first conference matchup will take place in Melbourne, when the Tars travel to Florida Tech to take on the Panthers.
