Tars Drop First Matches of 2019

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (September 8, 2019) – Despite outscoring the opposing Newberry Wolves 93-87 over four sets, Rollins dropped their first match of the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon. The Tars lost the first set 25-21, dominated set two 25-11, and then fell 26-24, 25-23 to close out the first match on the second day of the Flagler Invitational.

After winning their first two matches on Saturday, the Tars came out aggressively, with 38 attempts in the first set. However, 11 attack errors proved costly and Rollins fell 25-21. Set two was a display of utter domination as the Tars jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and then closed out with a 9-1 run to win 25-11. The third set was tough for the Tars, sitting just one point from taking it at 24-18. Newberry went on a miraculous comeback run, and took the set 26-24. In the fourth and final set, Rollins attempted a late rally after being down 24-19, but ended up falling 25-23.

Seven different players recorded at least one kill for Rollins. Erin Burke and Harper Smith led the way with eight apiece. Abby Harbinson tallied seven, Candace Doxey and Alexis Yeager chipped in six each, and Riley Spurlin added five. Rachel Reeve was the top assister for the third straight game, adding 25 to her season total. Jessika Linnemeyer had the most digs with 12, while also adding five assists.

In the second game of the day, Rollins faced off against tournament host Flagler. The Saints proved to be too much, sweeping the Tars 25-20, 25-17, 25-17.

Set one was tight for the most part, getting as close as 20-19 thanks to an Alexis Yeager kill. However, the Saints took five of the next six points to win the set. The second set saw the two squads notted up at twelve before a Flagler rally put it out of reach. It was a similar story in set three, as the game was tied at fourteen before Flagler pulled away late.

Harbinson, Burke and Smith each talllied five kills to lead the Tars. Reeve wrapped up her weekend with a line of four kills, 19 assists, and five digs in the final game.

Up next for the Tars is another weekend tournament held at Bentley University in Massachisetts. Rollins will play Molloy and Bentley on Friday September 13th, and then East Stroudsburg and Caldwell on the 14th Fans can follow the game live on RollinsSports.com
