WALTHAM, Mass. (September 13, 2019) - The Rollins volleyball team dropped two games on the first day of the Hoffman Memorial Tournament, hosted by Bentley University. The Tars fell 3-0 to Molloy, and then lost to the host Bentley Falcons, 3-1.
Rollins played Molloy close throughout the morning game, sending two of the three sets to extra time. The Tars held a 24-22 advantage in the first set, but the Lions were able to rip off three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Rollins knotted the score at 25 thanks to a Molloy attack error, but the Lions scored twice after that to claim the first set.
It was a similar story in set number two. The Tars took a 22-19 lead on a block by Candace Doxey and Alexis Yeager. However, Molloy was able to to score five straight after that, making the score 24-22. Rollins didn't go down easily as consecutive kills from Abby Harbinson and Harper Smith tied the game at 24. They could not muster anything after that, however, as Molloy claimed the second set, 26-24.
Rollins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set thanks with Jessika Linnemeyer holding down service. After Molloy broke the streak, the Lions scored nine straight with Sophia Smith serving. They steadily built their lead from there. The Tars never got closer than 3 points after that, and fell 25-20 in the final showdown.
Harper Smith tallied a double-double in the first game with 11 kills and 12 digs. Rebecca Kuehn set the table with a team high 15 assists, and Alexis Yeager added to her conference block total with four. The Tars put up 35 kills at a .127 clip as a team, but were foiled by 19 attack errors.
After a brief respite, the Tars found themselves back on the court to take on the host Bentley Falcons. The first set was all Bentley as they dominated up front, posting 15 kills at a .345 percentage. In set number two, the Tars hung around for the first half, but a seven-point run by the Falcons put the game out of reach, with a final tally of 25-19.
Rollins played their best set of the day in their third try. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, the Tars added another four straight points behind the service of Harbinson and the attacks of Smith. Later in the set, with the score 14-7, the Tars forced five straight attack errors, thanks in part to Yeager recording a block assist on three of the plays. Charlie Durbin then finished things off, serving the last three points to give the Tars a 25-11 set win. Rollins recorded 13 kills on an impressive .414 percentage in the third set.
Their joy was short lived however, as Bently bounced back and took a hard-fought set four, 25-23. Rollins held a late 23-22 advantage, but Bentley was able to score three straight to wrap up the set and match.
The two losses give Rollins an overall record of 2-4 on the season. They will play twice more in the Hoffman Memorial on Saturday. The first game is against East Stroudsburg at 9:00 am, followed by their final showdown against Caldwell at 3:00 pm.
