Tars Swashbuckled by Buccaneers

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (October 12, 2019) - Rollins suffered their seventh straight loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Barry Buccneers in three sets 25-15, 25-21, 25-21.

The Tars started off stong against the #23 ranked Buccaneers with Erin Burke recording two kills early on in the first set. The teams then traded a mix of errors and kills leading to a tie at seven. From there, Barry was able to score in small spurts, and their defense kept Rollins from mounting a comeback before the Bucs were able to win the set 25-15. The story of set one was on the attack ... Rollins recorded ten kills at .023 while Barry posted 16 kills at .324.

Set two was much more competitive, as the two teams swapped points and remained tied all the way up to 21 all. Unfortunately, Barry was able to secure the final four points of the set to make the final of 25-21. Candace Doxey had one of her best performances of the season in this one, totaling six kills, a block solo, and two block assists. The Tars had 15 kills in the set, which matched Barry's total. The biggest difference was the Tars' nine attack errors compared to four by the Buccaneers.

The third set was similar to the second, with a final score of 25-21 in favor of Barry. After tying the game at seven, Barry went on a six-point run to take a 13-7 lead. Later, Rollins went on a four point run of their own to pull within two at 15-13. NEither team was able to make a run after that, however, allowing Barry to take the win. Riley Spurlin turned in the top effort for the Tars, with seven kills.

Facing the fourth best defenisve team in the country, the Tars were held to a .103 attack percentage for the day. Spurlin and Burke were the leading scorers on the day for Rollins, with twelve and eleven kills, respectively. Doxey's four total blocks were a team high on the defensive side of the net.

With the loss, the Tars fall to 4-12 on the year, 1-7 in the Sunshine State Conference. Their next matchups will be at the Gulf South/Sunshine State crossover event in Hoover, Alabama next weekend. Each team from the conference will be participating, playing two games.
